Agreeing with the fact that the issues raised by the work of Thomas Canto would have a particular echo in the region. The two protagonists designed the\u00a0<em>Etherealities\u00a0<\/em>set based on a common reflection:<\/p><p>The recurring themes in Thomas Canto\u2019s work resonate directly with the city of Dubai and its infinite expansion. These uninterrupted constructions that stretch towards the sky, made of metal, glass and cables; materials found in the artist\u2019s works; echo the architectural fragments represented by his works.<\/p><p>The two series presented for this personal exhibition. are intimately linked to the city where they were created. Thus the artist was able to add to his Dubai inspirations, to make the creations a little more universal, based on photos taken in major megalopolises and whose visual mix allows him to create places that are both familiar and chimerical. These compositions seem identifiable with the direct environment of the exhibition space, reinforcing the issue of globalization evoked in the artist\u2019s work.<\/p><p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#edf1f200\">The personal exhibition\u00a0Etherealities\u00a0by Thomas Canto is structured around the presentation of two series of works that are opposed by their formal aspect: painting and sculpture. Their tone: black\/white and color. The academic format of the paintings confronts the hybrid format of the sculptures. However, their theme is the same: urban architecture and urban landscapes. These works present a vision of infinite rhythms, verticality, and visual harmony. They also refer to ideas of alienation or loss of bearings. These are sensations that anyone can experience by experimenting with the geometric constructions that constitute the megalopolises of the whole world.<br>The main apparent inspiration of these works \u201cthe Cities\u201d represents for the artist a concentration or a superposition of realities of which he endeavors to show the multiple interactions.<br>However, the urban landscapes represented in his works are not the only subject of this visual research. These creations suggest to the spectator to browse its structures to be interested in their hidden parts like their design, the power, the system, and its mechanisms. This is what defines their infinite development. It is a way of questioning the depth of our perception of this direct environment.<br>For years, the artist has continuously dealt with architecture and the subject of urbanity in his work. It represents the city as a dynamic object and a living entity. <br>Thomas Canto has often asked the question the purpose of contemporary urban life : How we build, how we consume and how we experience our cities.  <\/p><p><\/p><p>The paintings presented for\u00a0Etherealities\u00a0are inspired by existing places that the artist has experienced. The choice to name them in a similar way induces the idea of the globalization of contemporary architecture throughout the world. Their minimal tones evoke an almost binary and inhuman rhythm. They question the development of impersonal architectural ensembles, beyond individual considerations.<\/p><p>When the artist reveals these refined environments, it allows him to crystallize the idea of infinite development. It is inspired by the way the current urban space is constructed. The feeling of profusion, of superposition of shapes, lines, and perspectives illustrates the way in which this phenomenon can be perceived by those who create it and experience it: Humans.<\/p><p>In contrast to the paintings, a selection of sculptures in cut stainless steel, from the series entitled Structural Reflections, was designed for this exhibition. These three-dimensional works evoke another temporality. The treatment of the urban subject is more abstract and kinetic. By freeing himself from the traditional framework that is the canvas, the artist integrates the dimension of temporality in a different way. He combines spatial reordering and temporal reordering, drawing inspiration from the interior and exterior spaces that he associates. His meticulously created works trigger a temporalization of space through collaboration with a mobile audience. In these works, the aesthetic space is enriched and expanded through interaction with the viewer. He is invited to put the city in motion himself by choosing his own point of view. This experience is intensified by the layering of a more figurative element (front part) with a more abstract element (back part). This part of abstraction is induced by the infinite reflections produced by the treatments applied to the interior faces of the works. This contrast between the two parts that make up the sculptures places the viewer in a temporal and visual in-between. It asks questions about the relevance of constructions and creates a unique experience.<\/p><p>These decontextualized fragments of architecture also belong to conceptual art. They make us live the transition by which any object, a building, a tunnel, switches into another universe, that of Art. By extracting them from their environment and reinterpreting them, Thomas Canto gives them a new identity.<br>A tool for reflection, the work allows us to see ourselves, read ourselves, to feel this transition taking place within us. These readings are as important as the physical presence of the multiple openings that make up the work. This transformation, through the work of the consciousness which operates this manipulation of the body, is only possible through physical interaction with the works. It is by establishing this link between the work and the public that the invisible will be revealed.<\/p><p><\/p><p>\u2013<\/p><p><em>Etherealities\u00a0<\/em>est un projet n\u00e9 de la rencontre entre Rom Levy, \u00e9tabli a Dubai depuis 8 ans, qui collabore activement avec le gouvernement Emirati pour le d\u00e9veloppement culturel et Thomas Canto, artiste Fran\u00e7ais.<\/p><p>Cette exposition a amen\u00e9 l\u2019artiste \u00e0 s\u2019\u00e9tablir dans la r\u00e9gion pour d\u00e9velopper et concevoir les oeuvres pr\u00e9sent\u00e9es au coeur du sujet qu\u2019elles traitent : La ville, en l\u2019occurence Duba\u00ef, ses perspectives, ses r\u00e9flexions et son incessant d\u00e9veloppement.<\/p><p>Les multiples interactions avec les autorit\u00e9s ont permis l\u2019obtention d\u2019un visa culturel d\u2019une dur\u00e9e de 10 ans, offrant \u00e0 l\u2019artiste la possibilit\u00e9 de participer au d\u00e9veloppement du tissu culturel local.<br>S\u2019accordant sur le fait que les probl\u00e9matiques \u00e9voqu\u00e9es par le travail de Thomas Canto auraient un \u00e9cho particuli\u00e8rement juste dans la region. Les deux protagonistes ont con\u00e7us ensemble\u00a0<em>Etherealities\u00a0<\/em>en se basant sur une r\u00e9flexion commune :<\/p><p>Les th\u00e8mes r\u00e9currents dans l\u2019oeuvre de Thomas Canto r\u00e9sonnent directement avec la ville de Duba\u00ef et son expansion infinie. Ces constructions ininterrompues qui s\u2019\u00e9tirent vers le ciel, faites de m\u00e9tal, de verre et cables; mat\u00e9riaux que l\u2019on retrouve dans les oeuvres de l\u2019artiste; font \u00e9cho aux fragments d\u2019architecture figur\u00e9s par sesoeuvres.<\/p><p>Les deux s\u00e9ries pr\u00e9sent\u00e9es pour cette exposition personnelle. sont intimement li\u00e9es \u00e0 la ville o\u00f9 elles ont \u00e9t\u00e9 cr\u00e9\u00e9es. Ainsi l\u2019artiste a pu ajouter \u00e0 ses inspirations Duba\u00ef, rendant un peu plus universelles, les cr\u00e9ations, bas\u00e9es sur des photos prises dans les m\u00e9galopoles majeures et dont le m\u00e9lange visuel lui permet de cr\u00e9er des endroits \u00e0 la fois familiers et chim\u00e9riques. Ces compositions paraissent identifiables \u00e0 l\u2019environnement direct du lieu d\u2019exposition renfor\u00e7ant la probl\u00e9matique de globalisation \u00e9voqu\u00e9e dans le travail de l\u2019artiste.<\/p><p>L\u2019exposition personnelle\u00a0<em>Etherealities\u00a0<\/em>de Thomas Canto se structure autour la pr\u00e9sentation de deux s\u00e9ries d\u2019oeuvres qui s\u2019opposent et se compl\u00e8tent par leur aspect formel : la peinture et la sculpture. Leur tonalit\u00e9 : noir\/blanc et color\u00e9e . Le format acad\u00e9mique des peintures se confronte au format hybride des sculptures. Cependant leur th\u00e9matique est la m\u00eame : l\u2019architecture urbaine et les paysages urbains. Ces \u0153uvres pr\u00e9sentent une vision de rythmes infinis, de verticalit\u00e9 et d\u2019harmonie visuelle. Elles renvoient aussi \u00e0 des id\u00e9es d\u2019ali\u00e9nation ou de perte de rep\u00e8res. Ce sont des sensations que n\u2019importe qui peut \u00e9prouver en exp\u00e9rimentant les constructions g\u00e9om\u00e9triques que constituent les m\u00e9galopoles du monde entier. L\u2019inspiration principale apparente de ces travaux \u201cles Villes\u201d repr\u00e9sente pour l\u2019artiste une concentration ou une superposition de r\u00e9alit\u00e9s dont il s\u2019attache \u00e0 montrer les multiples interactions.<\/p><p>Toutefois, les paysages urbains repr\u00e9sent\u00e9s dans ses \u0153uvres ne sont pas le seul sujet de cette recherche visuelle. Ces cr\u00e9ations sugg\u00e8rent au spectateur de parcourir ses structures pour s\u2019int\u00e9resser \u00e0 leur partie cach\u00e9e comme leur conception, le pouvoir, le syst\u00e8me et ses m\u00e9canismes. C\u2019est ce qui d\u00e9finit leur d\u00e9veloppement infini. C\u2019est une mani\u00e8re d\u2019interroger la profondeur de notre perception de cet environnement direct.<\/p><p>Depuis des ann\u00e9es, l\u2019artiste traite en permanence l\u2019architecture et le sujet de l\u2019urbanit\u00e9 dans son travail. Il repr\u00e9sente la ville comme un objet dynamique et une entit\u00e9 vivante. Thomas Canto a souvent pos\u00e9 la question de la finalit\u00e9 de la vie<\/p><p>urbaine contemporaine : comment nous construisons, comment nous consommons et comment nous vivons nos villes.<\/p><p>Les peintures pr\u00e9sent\u00e9es pour\u00a0<em>Etherealities<\/em>, sont inspir\u00e9es de lieux existants que l\u2019artiste a exp\u00e9riment\u00e9s. Le choix de les nommer de mani\u00e8re similaire induit l\u2019id\u00e9e de la globalisation de l\u2019architecture contemporaine \u00e0 travers le monde. Ce titre commun a toutes les oeuvres fait r\u00e9f\u00e9rence aux coordonn\u00e9es g\u00e9ographiques de la ville de Duba\u00ef ce qui trouble un peu plus le rapport entre le lieu qui est repr\u00e9sent\u00e9 et le lieu o\u00f9 elles sont pr\u00e9sent\u00e9es. Leurs tonalit\u00e9s minimales \u00e9voquent un rythme presque binaire et inhumain. Elles interrogent le d\u00e9veloppement d\u2019ensembles architecturaux impersonnels, au-del\u00e0 des consid\u00e9rations individuelles.<br>Lorsque l\u2019artiste r\u00e9v\u00e8le ces environnements \u00e9pur\u00e9s, cela lui permet de cristalliser l\u2019id\u00e9e d\u2019un d\u00e9veloppement infini. Il s\u2019inspire de la fa\u00e7on dont l\u2019espace urbain actuel est construit. Le sentiment de profusion, de superposition de formes, de lignes et de perspectives illustre la mani\u00e8re dont ce ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne peut \u00eatre per\u00e7u par ceux qui le cr\u00e9ent et le vivent : les Humains.<\/p><p>En opposition aux peintures, une s\u00e9lection de sculptures en inox d\u00e9coup\u00e9, issues de la s\u00e9rie intitul\u00e9e\u00a0<em>R\u00e9flexions structurelles<\/em>, a \u00e9t\u00e9 con\u00e7ue pour cette exposition. Ces \u0153uvres en trois dimensions \u00e9voquent une autre temporalit\u00e9. Le traitement du sujet urbain est plus abstrait et cin\u00e9tique. En s\u2019affranchissant du cadre traditionnel qu\u2019est la toile, l\u2019artiste int\u00e8gre diff\u00e9remment la dimension de la temporalit\u00e9. Il combine r\u00e9ordonnancement spatial et r\u00e9ordonnancement temporel, en s\u2019inspirant des espaces int\u00e9rieurs et ext\u00e9rieurs qu\u2019il associe. Ses \u0153uvres minutieusement cr\u00e9\u00e9es d\u00e9clenchent une temporalisation de l\u2019espace par la collaboration avec un public mobile. Dans ces \u0153uvres, l\u2019espace esth\u00e9tique s\u2019enrichit et s\u2019\u00e9largit gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 l\u2019interaction avec le spectateur. Il est invit\u00e9 \u00e0 mettre lui-m\u00eame la ville en mouvement en choisissant son propre point de vue. Cette exp\u00e9rience est intensifi\u00e9e par la superposition d\u2019un \u00e9l\u00e9ment plus figuratif (partie avant) avec un \u00e9l\u00e9ment plus abstrait (partie arri\u00e8re). Cette part d\u2019abstraction est induite par les reflets infinis produits par les traitements appliqu\u00e9s sur les faces int\u00e9rieures des \u0153uvres. Ce contraste entre les deux parties qui composent les sculptures, place le spectateur dans un entre- deux temporel et visuel. Il pose des questions sur la pertinence des constructions et cr\u00e9e une exp\u00e9rience unique.<\/p><p>Ces fragments d\u2019architecture d\u00e9contextualis\u00e9s rel\u00e8vent \u00e9galement de l\u2019art conceptuel. Ils nous font vivre la transition par laquelle tout objet, un b\u00e2timent, un tunnel, bascule dans un autre univers, celui de l\u2019Art. En les extrayant de leur environnement et en les r\u00e9interpr\u00e9tant, Thomas Canto leur donne une nouvelle identit\u00e9. Outil de r\u00e9flexion, l\u2019\u0153uvre permet de se voir, de se lire, de ressentir cette transition s\u2019op\u00e9rer en nous. Ces lectures sont aussi importantes que la pr\u00e9sence physique des multiples ouvertures qui composent l\u2019\u0153uvre. Cette transformation, par le travail de la conscience qui op\u00e8re cette manipulation du corps, n\u2019est possible que par une interaction physique avec les \u0153uvres.
